I will never forget standing alone, backstage in a tiny freezing room, at Letterman… standing so close to the monitor I could see the CMYK dots. It felt like a dream sequence watching the band i love bring their song to millions. Here it is again with the treatment only Andre could give it.

I’ve recently become a fan of listening… so much so that when I’m on the phone with people who know me they sometimes stop, all of the sudden, and ask “Are you still there?” to which I reply “Yes, I’m just listening…”
I realize I’ve been known to say a word or two… but this idea that because I’ve taken a liking to listening, it causes my friends wonder if I’m still on the call, kinda bums me out. I’m learning about what it means to listen, I’m convinced I’ve said enough for a while and maybe this new listening trend in my life will bring some enlightenment…
That said, I’ve also been noticing signs in a different way… I find myself rushing less and seeing more. It’s nice to take things a little less serious, do some listening and make the most of what’s in front of me….
I’m searching and finding… a little at a time.

Sometimes living in New York is like living inside of some weird version of Coachella-Lollapalooza-CMJ thing… Here is a day-by-day, or should I say night-by-night account of the last 7 days…

SUNDAY: I saw a band I really like called SURFER BLOOD play an acoustic set at Other Music and then I saw a full set at Mercury Lounge. They are on tour in the States right now… you can GO SEE THEM.

Spent some awesome time with the “Little Pals” this past week… I was reminded of how much time I spent growing up, with coloring books. I was looking around the other night at coloring pages and found some of my favorite historical figures. I am of the mind that art is a decision that your soul makes. I was with a group of friends last week and sarcastically made a comment about graffiti… I was deeply saddened when I later learned that my comment didn’t come across the way I had thought… I learned that I can’t go around causally being sarcastic, expecting that people just know me and know of how passionate I really am about certain things…

My appreciation, specifically for this medium is such, that I’m of the belief that climbing Mt. Everest with a can or marker and painting a dot on a rock would not make me an artist… I mean, I know it can be argued, but I’d like to take the chance and say right here that the amount of planning and execution that goes into this medium is what inspires me… not to mention, when an individual then shows up, puts in the work and the result is social commentary, thought provoking piece of art. We’re talking about individuals who don’t get scaffolding in the Sistine Chapel… they work in the dark, with the constant threat of authorities who have nothing better to do, but hassle them…

I grew up on While You Were Sleeping and was fortunate to work with that magazine on some stuff a few years back… I’m not trying to be down or co-sign anything, graffiti and the artists who work in this medium do not need any help from me. The history, the legacy, the people who work in this medium sacrifice a lot for their love, it is a lifestyle and is of the utmost respect in my eyes. How we can worship artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and still arrest artists is beyond me. There are a lot of people who have been working for years and are just getting a look now… I guess “better late than never” but pop culture owes many of these artists an apology and I’d like to start it off by saying… I learned a lesson, I don’t want anyone to ever think that i take their life’s passion lightly. Yes, this all may seem a little cryptic, but I’m sharing what I’ve learned and I appreciate learning in whatever shape or form it may come…

What’s up to one of my favorite eating places SOUEN!!! This is the first place that I ate with my buddies Bryan Ling and Steve Aoki… it will always be one of my top choices when it comes to eating time… One question to my Souen homies… WHAT IS UP WITH THE TIE-DYE, PEACE SIGN, BASEBALL on your counter?

Okay, wait a minute… FAT KID PIZZA… I have an issue with you. Look, ask anyone who’s know me for a minute… I love food! I was 215 pounds in my senior year of college FOR REAL… that’s how much I love food! I grew up on Ho-Ho’s, Doritos, Cinnimon rolls, Root Beer… etc.

That said… I know I would never pass out with decent pizza anywhere in my vicinity… who does that? Even as I’ve grown up (and now I only eat half a pizza at a time) I’m not really down with your depiction of a “FAT KID” out cold with half eaten slices everywhere. A. It makes me look bad, as if loving pizza makes you pass out like some kind of derelict. & 2. I would NEVER, I repeat NEVER leave a slice unattended… by the way, this just makes your product look less than awesome. FAT KID CO. gimmie a call… I have some genius marketing ideas that don’t involve alienating my people.

I had lunch at RUE 57 the other day… it’s one of the first restaurants I ate at when I first visited New York. Whenever I go there I get this weird feeling, like something really life changing is about to happen… I guess because of the positive changes going on at that point & time in my life… it’s weird because that mind set makes everything there taste pretty amazing.

Time to travel… when you go different places you see variations of things you don’t see at home… of course you do. This is a little number I like to call “Everything I don’t like in a can”.

Cheeburger Cheeburger… okay, it’s really cool that someone let their 7 year old name their company but… nobody is getting their Cheeburger on at 7:34 in the a.m. I haven’t had a cheeseburger in about 9 years so I’m not really an expert these days… I don’t really know if anyone should be eating a Cheeburger before they get on a plane? Just a thought…

I take self portraits. It started because I’m alone a lot of the time. I do it now because it’s become a little project… I think setting up a shot, then allowing people to walk into it, not knowing they are part of my picture might be a new addition to this experiment… we’ll see.

*Lots of new “little things” to post… now I’m home for a few days and I’m stoked to write some…
**Yes, I know I’ve been wearing the same thing for 2 weeks… that situation is being attended to.

When it grows cold in New York City, or probably anywhere for that matter… the streets get empty… when the streets get empty there’s less noise… when there’s a lack noise I have to re-adjust how I think.
After travel, travel, travel, sitting in the house is fun for approximately 2 days… somewhere around the 53rd hour when I just start to stare at things, I have to get out.

So I took the membership card that my good pal Roberrrto B. got me and went to the MoMA all the way up on 53rd street and looked at what some other people had spent their time creating… I spent about 3 hours walking around and you know how it is when you work out and it feels like nothing is happening? Then the next day you are sore? That’s what happened…

Basically the next day I’d grown a new interest, everywhere I went I saw repetition in a new light. It’s kinda funny… so simple but all of the sudden I was staring at repetition… repetition in it’s relation to choices. While I keep looking everywhere for entertainment, at this time I find myself entirely satisfied with the simple commentary of a multitude of choices… you can often catch me in a deli staring at a bunch of different colors, packages containing the same thing with the slightest little difference, a choice, something fine tuned for each consumer… a dozen flavors… a different use for the same thing… made specifically just for us… so it seems…
My only disclaimer is: This is not an attempt to be interesting… I only desire to be interested…
