About 3 years ago my friend played me what would be the first demos of a band called Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros… from the first notes of a song with no vocals on it, I knew something special was in the works…


I’ve been fortunate to watch and participate in the amazing process of the beginning and growth of a few things in my life… it’s always a wonderful experience, brand new every time… from music or art based movements to friends and family having their first children these things grow, go out into the world and reach further than you could ever imagine… it’s these experiences that keep me in “the game” and make me want, more and more, to be a part of what is new, from the very beginning.


My friends were in town this past week, seeing them reach the world at each new level, share the positive message they have and make so many people stoked is so awesome… for the first stop, we took a boat to Governor’s Island… SOLD OUT show!

It’s hard to remember to take pictures of this band… they start to play and it kinda makes time stand still…

Before you know it… the night is over and the microphone used to deliver the voices is lying on stage… just a microphone…

Next stop 2 SOLD OUT nights at Webster Hall… Jade is always… well I think she was born smiling…

People write about Alex, the voice of Edward, but the funny thing is when you are with the band, there is no one, no singular person… I’ve never been around a group of people of this number that operate as one unified force…

I think this is the secret, the method, that can’t really be described… it’s the formula that makes it all work and makes what this family of people so powerful both in front of the world and behind the scenes when they create…

I once witnessed a monologue Michael Stipe gave in the middle of an R.E.M performance describing his experience, as a kid, watching a band from the back of the room… I always try to catch some of the show from that vantage point. He was right, it’s still special for me…

The Matuso Twin’s younger brother “Deuce” is a lighting wizard… watching the show from his vantage point in the booth is also priceless…

Nico plays guitar, the rest of the band lines the stage and Alex sits on the floor, the entire crowd sitting and singing along with him… “If the floor is to dirty for you, sit on your friend’s lap… then we’ll all be sitting on each other’s laps…” he jokes.

himself, a couple months ago up at the Montauk Yacht Club… it was a totally cool couple of days to say the least…


This behind the scenes video was shot by Jay Buim… he’s awesome, the whole crew was awesome… in fact, I wish I could do this every day… in fact, we should do this every day…

WHY IS KARL LAGERFELD SO FAMOUS?


One evening, morning, back in 2006, when I was living down on Rivington & Ridge, in the Lower East Side, a crazy thing happened… I was walking home from another night of DJing, a little before 4 a.m. when a black Suburban screeched to a halt a block ahead of me, four or five people jumped out in a hurry, so I stopped and stood close to a building. I did my time on Harvard & Sherman in D.C. so I know better than to roll up on halting vehicles with people jumping out of them…

What happened next was kindof crazy… a well dressed man and woman stood in a lamp-lit doorway as a person that looked like Karl Lagerfeld began to snap photos of them. I crossed the street and walked slowly past a tall kid with Air Jordans on, who had also come from the Suburban, and as I got closer I realized what I was witnessing, was a gorilla style photo shoot…

The man was in fact Karl and within minutes I was inside of my apartment wondering if I had consumed to many Red Bulls…


[DISCIPLINE]



A couple days later I read on the internet that what I thought was some sort of mirage, was real and that night time photo shoots in odd parts of the city, really happen in the high fashion world of Karl Lagerfeld. I never really knew much about the man who draws 12 collections a year, except for that he was a pretty big deal and had been for longer than I’ve been alive.

A few years later watching Lagerfeld Confidential, which seemed a little like a glorified interview, but definitely grew my respect for the man… I became a little more interested in this anomaly of an individual. I collect documentaries and noticed that he speaks in prophetic metaphors like Bob Marley and Joe Strummer…

It turns out that this deified individual dines, draws, snaps pictures with little point and shoot cameras, tells dirty jokes, attends little joke runway shows put on by his co-workers and much more in his daily, unglamorous life.


[LEGACY]



It wasn’t until I watched Karl’s segment in The Day Before, that I saw him as a humane being and not just a Rockstar Fashion Designer. Sitting in the darkness of my apartment in silence and watching the DVD two times back to back, I took notice of a very normal person working a supernatural schedule, all the while attending to his staff as if they were his best friends, almost a family.

I accepted the hype around this man, for my own reasons, as I was able to observe his process and appreciate the care with which he crafted just one of his many responsibilities. I view FENDI and the staff of the Italian Fashion House with a whole new respect. It’s amazing how the whole crew gathers to watch the show they’ve worked to prepare, right after the event all seated in one room… clapping and cheering each other on like a sports team after winning a title.


[REVIEW]



It’s a really honest look into a surreal world full of smoke an mirrors… watching this made me not only more appreciative of another person’s efforts, but inspired me to work as hard as they do. It’s incredible to believe that anyone can do this, any of us can accomplish this or any other feat, with dedication, perseverance and a humble attitude.

I’d encourage everyone to check out these DVDs, solely for the fact that, all to often we are convinced that climbing mountains is for people with greater fortitude… I believe more and more every day that progress of any kind, great or small, is simply for those that want it.
