Sometimes I put on a song and let it play on repeat all day… I did it once in college, I think I was kinda outta my mind that day anyway… my friend Dave still tells the story. I’m not sure if it perpetuates my insanity or just proves it… or maybe it’s just a regular thing. I’ve been listening to this one song for the last 3 days.


Anyway… I spent a lot of time with different friends for the last week. My birthday happened and all I really wanted was to see my friends a couple at a time and to ride my bike. I did both. I miss my family… I’m gonna see them this week.


I rode up the West Side in the rain at night to attend this thing my friend Vashtie invited me to… I rode back down in the rain and stopped to take a picture of the old Frying Pan… lotta memories there.

Yesterday, August 23rd, was my birthday and I did something I’ve never done before…


You see… I’m not actually a Holiday person… I won’t get into it, it’s not worth getting into… normally I ghost out on my birthday, I don’t answer any calls, I don’t answer any e-mails… I usually just go to a record store, go to the movies and feel melancholy all day, but yesterday was different.


For the first time in my life I spent the whole day sitting in front of the computer, phone in hand, answering every Text Message, E-Mail, Phone Call, Instant Message, BBM, Facebook… you name it, I answered and talked and thanked each and every person for loving me.


People often ask me… do you read all the messages people send you on Twitter? The answer is yes… every single one. Last night I sat for hours on end and read EVERY message, then copied EACH name down… here is a list of people who sent me Birthday messages…I want to say THANK YOU to each and every person who wrote me… THANK YOU ALL for saying nice things… THANK YOU all, even if we haven’t met yet, one day we will and the fact that a person would take the time to write something positive, something nice, blows my mind… every time.

This week went by so fast I don’t know where to begin… I went to D.C. and back in a day, I ran 40 miles (literally), I made a PLAY LIST

My friends from LA came to town this week… it was kinda weird as I’m accustomed to being taken all around their town. I guess it wasn’t so different… Tal was, as always, the “Little Boss” and somehow still managed to drag Bobby Hundreds

Spent Wednesday cleaning up the massive mess of my apartment, because my good friend Bryan Ling is coming to crash for a few days…

Bryan used to live in New York but moved to California a few years ago, to spend his every waking moment working with a band that we all love called Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Every couple months we get to hang out here, or in LA, and he always brings new and radical music for me to hear.

He’s on the East Coast for some shows, both ES&TMZ and a new exciting band called J.Roddy Walston and the Business… as always he brought along a bunch of new music and as always I’m excited to share it…


I was cleaning and stopped for a second to take a quick snap of my fridge… It’s like my own personal scrap book-inspiration board… I think there’s more stuff on the fridge than there is in it…

If you don’t already know about the radio show FIRST PERSON
, it’s a little thing I’ve been working on each week and it’s grown to average 12,000 listeners every Thursday night! I wanted to create a program with no other agenda than to let people listen and form their own opinions about the music. I’m not the best with the “radio personality” game, but the music makes up for it.

I am so lucky to have friends like my friends at idobi radio… the opportunity to share new music doesn’t always come when I’m DJing and this little project has grown and will hopefully continue to.

When I moved to Manhattan I knew approximately 3 people… on Saturdays I’d wake up at 9am or so and just walk the city. If you’ve ever been to New York on the weekends you know that on days that start with “S” the streets are “ghost town” empty until about noon. I’d get up on the weekends, grab my i-pod and walk down to the bottom of the island and then turn around and walk to Central Park… that is how I learned my way around the city. I have so much respect for this city and the people who live here, it’s always played a bigger role, to me, in the movies than any character, story line or star.


Finding my way around on foot those first year weekends meant I get to see every little scab, dimple and scar of this city’s make up. I saw people and found places that made me think about and reminded me of different things. I found inspiration and as soon as I could feel lonely, I’d turn around and see a landmark that made me feel so close to greatness… there’s a spot in this city to match every memory you have and just as many to make new ones.


One Saturday I walked down Broadway toward the courthouse and instead of taking a right on Church street, I decided to take a left and walk to the other side of the island… that’s how I found South Street Seaport. Staring down the cobblestone Fulton street then stepping out on to Pier 17 it felt a little like being in Annapolis for a minute… I walked through a mall that made me think the one where I once worked, in Waldorf… then out on the third floor deck to look over at Brooklyn. There’s something about that spot down there that reminds me of so many parts of my life. It’s definitely New York, there are plenty of tourists to remind you of that, but if you look out over the water and think about what this city was like a hundred years ago the little annoyances fade…


I don’t know if I’ll ever call myself a “New Yorker” but I love this city, every scab… every dimple… every scar…
