Imagine a time…

Can you imagine a time when being a kid in Hollywood was fun and safe and probably kinda magical, free from the scrutiny of a ridiculous degree of constant attention payed to every move you make, who you’re with, what you’re eating, what you’re wearing (you’re a kid by the way), how much money your last movie did, if your parents are getting a divorce, if you made a mistake… that kids your age make…

Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez

I’ll bet it was a lot less hectic back before digital… the smiles seem so care-free…
Tobey McGuire, Leonardo Dicaprio

You could probably go out on dates fairly undetected… at least during the making and release of your first couple movies, records, ad campaigns etc…

Ralph Macchio

Your family could come to Hollywood to visit and then return to life in your hometown without everyone reading about every aspect of your life on a daily basis and then feeling free to question them about whatever they read… true or not.

Jennifer Grey with parents

Before the age of this digital overdose you could make a few movies and return to a normal life without being considered a failure… “where are they now” was a genuine quandary, not an insult.
Zach Gilligan & Anthony Michael Hall

Speaking for myself… I love the idea of growing up in those days before the aspect of “Us vs. Them” media…

Noah Hathaway & Barret Oliver

This isn’t meant to be a list of pictures with a rant about digital cameras, the mob of grown men who carry them and have, in a short time, changed the environment and culture of a society…

GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE!!! (I really love this picture)

I’m just dreaming of what it was like to have a little more freedom… but I guess with progress real, technological and otherwise, there are always sacrifices. Just a thought…

*As always, click on the photos to enlarge them & feel free to leave something behind…

I enjoyed reading this a lot because I’ve thought it so many times. We’ve all fallen prey to watching E! and seeing a preview of who Miley is hanging out with or who the Jonas brothers are dating and gone back and seen the full clip. Its curiosity yet, it sucks so much that we think that way. Why should the fact that they’re famous mean t hat we have to care about every detail of their life down to what they eat or who they do. the new age of technology has made it so available for us that we care even when we really don’t want to.

I was kinda thinking about the same thing today. How our lives would be different if we didn’t have computers and internet, you know?
That sounds so appealing to me, like you said, more freedom. I’m pretty sure me and my friends would spend more time together than we do now, and that’s kind of sad I think. (No game-addicted friends and such, haha.)
But again, like you said, it’s almost impossible now to live without computers, internet and all that.
But it seems so nice sometimes..

It’s nice to dream ;)

There was a time when ppl respected other ppls right to have privacy. Now everyone is under the microscope and under the flashes of cameras..filming every aspect of a persons life..just because they are ‘celebrities’. Before they are celebrities they are human beings who make mistakes like anyone else and have families and friends. Me personally, I think there should be stricter laws and an ‘Invasion of Privacy’ act in regards to just how and when another party can film, take audio, and the release of ANYTHING before the concensus of the person that is involved. People shouldn’t have to go around being afraid to lead normal daily lives because of privacy infringement. My opinion. :)

Oh yeah..I remember watching Goonies numerous times. My fav actor, Mr. Astin was in that movie. :) All the guys were young! :)

Real fresh!! Dope outlook Chief! Stay up Josh!

I do agree that a time where the media coverage was much more limited sounds amazing…
but I wouldn’t blame technology (digital cameras) for the cause of our obsession with actors/musicians

I have never understood this constant obsession people have with needing to know who’s doing who and what and where. It has nothing to do with us, so honestly why do we care if Brad and Angelina’s relationship is falling apart?

I always feel extremely bad for people who have cameras in their face constantly. I get “freedom of the press” but where is the subjects “right to privacy?”

Our country is messed up in so many ways. Let’s go back to the 80’s and throw a party. I always wanted to dance with Jennifer Gray.

Love this blog Josh xxx

Unfortunately being a celebrity has a price. Papparazi do this because there is the need. Take it away and I am sure a lot of Celebs would hate it. It is tough because bad press can either make or break you. Look at Mel Gibson for instance. Then there are those celebs who ring and inform the papparazi where they are going to be. Some love it.
I am guiltly of reading Celebrity Magazines but don’t like the bad stuff. I just want Jennifer Aniston to find true love.
If I saw a celeb..I would say a polite ‘hi’ and let them be. Too many think they are above us anyway, so I don’t really care what they do.
Rock on Josh..u are my true Celeb!

I’m young, born in the 90s, but I love The Goonies and Ralph Maccio (karate kid and the outsiders are the ones I remember he in) and Emilio Estevez (the outsiders too and also The breakfast club) and all those 80s young actors, I really love 80s teenage and not so teenage movies.
And I really what you wrote.
:)
Cheers.

Wowee I love the 80’s!!! I still class the goonies as one of my all time favourite movies and Im 26 haha goonies will never die!!!!

mrm

Yup. Imagine a time when rich and famous actors and musicians weren’t hypocritical populist ‘victims’: when they didn’t use their image (rather than just talent) to make a fortune then complained when they couldn’t have their cake and eat it, when people wanted more that was out of their control; when they accepted that taking their enormous earnings from the masses might make them more open to populist curiosity. Imagine a time when they might realise the same companies that pay their massive wages also are behind the magazines that make their lives “so tough”. Yeah it’s ridiculous that people want to know so much about other people, but that’s life. If you don’t dig it and want to be just an artist, even if it means being broke, go do something with brains and balls rather than populist appeal.

When encountered by this view, imagine regarding what mainly interests you. Blue Movies

I know what you mean exactly! And the changes in the “industry” of “celebrity photographers” and media has been enormous. It seems that government is only now beginning to address the fine line between an individual’s right to privacy and that of the public interest.

Sadly, I was thinking as I looked back at some of these stars, quite a few of them got tripped up and involved in all sorts of negative stuff regardless of their perhaps-more-protected lives in Hollywood. It’s always going to be a crazy roller coaster!

YODASPEAKS

Interesting points Josh, and nice photos, a rememberence of time gone, but it is always easier to look back to reflect, The glamour that was once Hollywood that includes the mystery is faded, due to the media and the innocents of those that attempt to reside in the land that creates the mystery that is in a media bubble. Unfortunate for anyone one attempting to raise a family with out being stalked, have you seen the video of Kate Moss at LAX? I have been working with a group called the http://www.paparazzi-reform.org they are working to change the laws to protect the minor children who have no voice, working to protect their right to privacy. I will continue to work to protect minor children who are stalked or who have no voice to protect their privacy. I do not buy the pap rags, do not care who does what to whom and would never ask ANYONE for their signature, as I find that creepy. I work in the industry, have studied for years and love the film industry, and I fully understand the power of today’s media, and I take responsibility for my actions and behavior, as I do not create Youtube videos to post to humiliate myself or others. I maintain my privacy by being a professional and not seeking media attention for the private matters in my life.
I enjoyed your post Josh, and the topic is a very dynamic situation that holds every player responsible. All my Yoda best goes out to you today…cheers

sharon

I think many “celebs” play the “oh I hate the attention, its so hard being famous” routine, but secretly crave fame and attention. They need it to feel special, to feel more important. It is obvious from some of their ridiculos antics right down to who they choose to date so that they will be seen. As far as the public goes; very, very shallow. One feeds off of the other. Thanks for binging the subject up for discussion. Always love to read your blogs.

I love that pic of the Goonies. I don’t know much about Hollywood…I’ve never been there. In fact I’m just some girl from England…but I expect the pressure on young people must have been unfathomable. Especially when it came to drugs. I guess some things are just easily accessible in some places – such as Hollywood.
Corey Haim was lost to drugs at some point I believe? Such a great young actor. You should have tried to get a picture of him with Feldman circa Lost Boys ‘87 :)
I cannot imagine what it must be like to be hounded all of the time, for every move and word to be documented.
Must be extraordinarily tiresome, but more so, I bet it makes you feel so powerful, that you’re an influence on so many.

Interesting blog post – I have wondered how celebrities honestly feel about being famous. I wonder what honestly goes through there minds on a daily basis. Is it truly worth being famous? I don’t know that I will ever know the answer to the question, but I would be interested to find out.
